Steps To Sustaining The Life Of A Conscious Existence

by Skye Kimberley Mallon

Conscious existence. What does that mean? Fitness, diet, eco-friendly, meditation, sustainability? Well, it’s a combination of all those elements. But, I’m referring to you personally, rather than external factors. Surely you’ve had the desire to convert?

The world needs to convert to conscious existence. Now is the time to tap into the intricacies of your bodies, environments, feelings and minds. Why? Because we all want to live happier, longer and more fulfilled lives that we know will make some kind of positive or meaningful impact.

This isn’t an article to try and tell you how to clean up your diet or try a new kind of movement. I’m also not asking you to donate money to a conservation organisation, become a ‘timeless-piece’ fashionista or a tree-hugger. Although, these are fantastic tools to help you lead a better, more ‘conscious’ lifestyle. Nobody ever seems to talk about how we can sustain these efforts to lead a long and happy conscious existence.

It’s easy to start one today and then drop it tomorrow, right?

The questions I ask is, what does it mean to sustain a more conscious existence? Do we need to hone in on our actions, or is it simply about tapping deeper into our brains to create a mindset shift?

Conscious Existence And What It Means

The more information and tools we’re given, the easier it is for us to be thrown off course. It happens daily. You get passionate about whatever you’re currently doing, see something cooler and then hop onto that bandwagon. That’s no way to create a sustainable life. It’s scary how easily influenced we are today. There’s a great deal to gain from trying different approaches to living, but there’s also a lot to lose by yo-yo’ing.

Platforms like Instagram and YouTube make it challenging. They brainwash us without us even thinking twice. Think about how many videos you watch per day, or feeds you scroll through. How many times have you been swayed by another kind of lifestyle tool? Try counting. It’s frightening, right?

This is what I want you do going forward. Be conscious to live a conscious existence. As soon as you make this shift in thinking, you start to consult with yourself first before leaping into another unsustainable tool. Remember, what’s going to be sustainable for you is very different from your friend.

Learn To Be Conscious With Yourself

before pouncing into that new tool. That’s what it means to sustain a conscious existence.

From this diet to this new kind of fashion trend, to this training style, to Ayurveda, to recycling, to meditation, to veganism and whatever else. What’s the point of all these ‘healthy’ tools, if we can’t stick to one, master it and create the perfect balance?

It is the progressive realization of conscious mastery over your mind.

The challenge is that it takes consciousness to grow consciousness. But you needn’t worry about this because you already have the seed. Think of it like fire. You have a flame, and you want to turn that flame into a huge blaze. How do you do it? You add fuel. The following list includes examples of how you can add fuel to your flame of consciousness to become a raging inferno of consciousness. Well, OK, the analogy sort of falls apart there, but you get the idea.

Conscious Existence Is A Universal Language

I think Longevity explains this better than I’d be able to in only one post. It’s a very intricate topic and this is only the beginning of my onion peeling process. Longevity states that for many people, deep uncertainty and despair have plagued them over the past two years. Mental health has been the most unstable it’s ever been. There’s no denying that mental health is our biggest issue to handle.

Things are happening really quickly now. Everybody wants instant gratification and fast success. The pressure is on and many feel lost, depressed, anxious, burned out or confused because of it.

And I think a conscious existence is all we have left to turn to, for us to heal. The consciousness that this is never going to be sustainable in the long-term, is more real now than ever before. Health and wellbeing are at the forefront and thank goodness.

It’s unrealistic and superficial to think you can escape the long haul to conscious existence and mental clarity. It won’t be simple, because it isn’t. It’s a lifestyle journey. Take it from me. I’m learning more about myself everyday. There’s times when I feel so sure of myself and other times where I think I know absolutely nothing.

Superficial attempts and quick-fix coping strategies are not sustainable. All these do is keep you functioning at a base level. However, as Longevity explains, to shift our habitual patterns of behaviour. We need to begin by recognising these patterns as they arise. That’s conscious existence. And only then can we start applying the methodologies and tools for healing.

It Takes Consciousness To Grow A Conscious Existence

I really like how Steve Pavlina explains it. He says that it takes consciousness to be conscious. You’ve got this though, because the seed is already planted in your head. The fact that you’re here, reading this is a fantastic start!

All you have to do is ignite that flame within yourself. It’s there, you just need to dig deeper and light it up. When I left everything here in South Africa to build my dream lifestyle in Kenya, and it didn’t go according to plan. I hit an all-time low. In fact, I had to realise that my conscious existence was stronger than what was falling apart around me. I had to accept the situation, allow myself time to break, then recollect, make adjustments and start again. But stronger this time.

You’ve got to get to know yourself better than you’ve ever known anybody else. Conscious existence means compassion and self-acceptance to new heights.

This is the biggest challenge that I think we’re all facing. How to create sustainable ways of thinking, feeling and behaving. This includes conscious awareness, community, connection to ourselves, one another, and nature.

Conscious Existence In The Most Disconnected Era

I love the irony in this. Our world is more connected than it’s ever been and yet we’re all so fragmented with our interactions. There are so many reasons nowadays to be stressed. In fact, we’re conditioned to believe that stress is normal and we should carry this stress undertone wherever we go. How is this sustainable? Crashing economies, disconnected relationships, corrupt governments and unstable jobs. And the stress response is usually not as obvious as we’d like to think. However, a conscious existence would know better.

We know this is problematic. But why is it so darn difficult to sustain any kind of positive change?

This Is What Happens

When you’re not in tune with a conscious existence, then it’s easy to get your body wrapped up into a state of chronic stress. According to Longevity, chronically activated stress response shuts down the body’s self-healing capability. This leads to chronic inflammation and, eventually, chronic disease.

In a nutshell, you will enter survival mode. And you don’t want to be stuck in this situation, because you will follow your survival instincts rather than rational and productive actions.

The solution: Be rational and gentle in your approach. It is our responsibility to remain conscious and in control, even when the world feels exceptionally unstable.

Conscious Existence And The Steps I Recommend To Sustain One

Step 1: Stop To Smell The Roses. Literally.

I find that so many people walk around with their heads in the sand, brushing every problem they have under the rug. How on earth do you think any change will happen if this is what you keep doing?

Consciousness requires attention and this is an art that we need to refine. Start to focus on the things you tell yourself because that’s what you will attract into your life. Stop ignoring the cues that your body is giving you. Listen to them and receive them. Recognising what is causing imbalances in our lives is the secret to living a more conscious existence. I love how Conscious Lifestyle Mag talks about our chakras and tuning into our deeper voices.

Your heart, mind and body are closely intertwined and you need to listen to what they’re telling you collectively. It’s too easy to sink into repetitive and familiar patterns. Rather than doing the same thing day in an day out, check in with your default patterns and pay them closer attention.

Does your body need to rest? Is your gut health feeling out of whack? The Good Gut Guru perfectly explains the microbiome and how it affects your constitution. Physically or emotionally, how do you feel?

Step 2: Accept The Truth Of A Conscious Existence

It’s very easy to pretend like everything is fine. But at some point, it will catch up with you, and you will need to face these matters eventually. Learning to open up your heart to new ways of living through adaptability and resilience is what will make all the difference.

Looking at your problems in the eyes is hard, but you cannot hide from the uncomfortable times. This is what you must go through before you can experience a more enlightened and easier pathway to conscious existence.

Step 3: Allow Yourself The Beauty Of Rest

This brings me to an even more important aspect of reaching a conscious existence. We do not give ourselves permission to truly rest and relax. Nor to refrain from self-stress and all other kinds. Do you know that it’s okay to take time out and not have one care in the world? This is therapy for the soul.

In fact, this is the hardest step because it requires a lot of courage. You’re basically putting your body through intense rest, and retraining it to relax. This then brings you to the tools that will allow you to do this. There are so many unique healing practices you can use to help reach a conscious existence.

I like to use the ones that work best for me. Whether it’s through massage, yoga, aromatherapy, art, cooking, dance, daily movement, a mindfulness practice, breathwork, or deep, restorative sleep.

Step 4: Conscious People And Recognising Impermanence

If you are able to realise that nothing is fixed in life. Then you’re going to be fine. What you’re going through now will not always be there. Sometimes it’s difficult to think of life in that way but it’s the truth. Conscious existence means being aware of the impermanence of every situation.

You need to know that it will change and you have the amazing ability to grow and adapt. Stay tuned for my ebook that’s going to go into detail on this subject!

The second most important thing is to know who is worth giving the time of day to. You want to surround yourself with those who are conscious. The ones who aren’t will only lower your conscious existence.

‘Seek out others you perceive to be at a higher level of consciousness than you are.’ ‘Talk to them, ask questions, and enjoy their presence.’ ‘Allow their ideas and awareness to infect you, and you’ll find yourself expanding in all directions.’ ‘You’ll become more honest, more courageous, more compassionate. The list goes on. ‘

Steve Pavlina

Never sink into the trap of another person’s negativity.

The only way to work around this is to do everything in your power to achieve a happy balance. Focus on spending time with people who raise your consciousness instead of those you feel the need to help. Learn from those who are a little more conscious, and help those who are a little less conscious than you. This is the best way to live a conscious existence that serves you good fortune whilst expanding your consciousness everywhere.

Master The Art Of Learning

To live with a conscious existence, you need to remain a student at life. When school is over, you start learning all over again. Be open to new knowledge and never stop seeking out new ways of thinking, experiencing and living.

Whatever you choose to do, be sure that it raises your energy. Never allow something to lower it because that’s what causes sickness. Nourish your physical body and create a constant flow of energy to experience things holistically. If you starve your energy, you also deprive your levels of consciousness.

Here’s the biggie! Be aware of what you’re eating. Exercise with an awareness of how you’re affecting your body and mind. Before I eat anything, I try to consider its effect on my energy, not just in the short term but in the long term as well.

Always ask yourself, ‘Will this produce energy or sickness?’

Set Your Intention

We’ve heard yogi’s saying this. But it’s the truth. When you have a clear intention in life, your consciousness heightens. Therefore, you have a stronger ability to self-expand or self-contract. Basically, what I mean is we all have the freedom of choice. You can choose to be depressed or you can choose to be happy.

If you constantly feed your mind thoughts of certainty and consciousness that is what will manifest in your life. However, if you choose to lie, be fearful, act ignorantly, or be cruel you put out the energy to lower your consciousness. Your conscious existence will be zero and fear, dishonesty, ignorance, cruelty and hardship will be attracted into your life.

The beauty of it all is that you are in the pilot’s seat. You get to choose. Every thought that enters your mind will either expand or contract your conscious existence. Best you choose carefully.

Girls, the core reason behind your Anxiety is the fear of the future. The unknown. I write this knowing exactly how scary that thought of it can get because you’re uncertain about what’s going to happen. This is how to stop anxiety in its tracks!
